ABSTRACT

Several months after COVID-19 many individuals still report persisting symptoms, the so-called 'post-COVID-19 syndrome'. An immunological dysfunction is one of the main pathophysiological hypotheses. As sleep is central to the functioning of the immune system, we investigated whether self-reported pre-existing sleep disturbance might be an independent risk factor for the development of post-COVID-19 syndrome. A total of 11,710 participants of a cross-sectional survey (all tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2) were classified into probable post-COVID-19 syndrome, an intermediate group, and unaffected participants at an average of 8.5 months after infection. The case definition was based on newly occurring symptoms of at least moderate severity and ≥20% reduction in health status and/or working capacity. Unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios were calculated to investigate the association between pre-existing sleep disturbances and subsequent development of post-COVID-19 syndrome while controlling for a variety of demographic, lifestyle, and health factors. Pre-existing sleep disturbances were found to be an independent predictor of subsequent probable post-COVID-19 syndrome (adjusted odds ratio 2.7, 95% confidence interval 2.27-3.24). Sleep disturbances as part of the post-COVID-19 syndrome were reported by more than half of the participants and appeared to be a new symptom and to occur independent of a mood disorder in most cases. Recognition of disturbed sleep as an important risk factor for post-COVID-19 syndrome should promote improved clinical management of sleep disorders in the context of COVID-19. Further, it may stimulate further research on the effect of improving sleep on the prognosis of COVID-19 long-term sequelae and other post-viral conditions.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic increases the risk of psychological problems, especially for the infected population. Sleep disturbance and feelings of defeat and entrapment are well-documented risk factors of anxiety symptoms. Exploring the psychological mechanism of the development of anxiety symptoms is essential for effective prevention. This study aimed to examine the mediating effects of entrapment and defeat in the association between sleep disturbance and anxiety symptoms among asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers in Shanghai, China. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from March to April, 2022. Participants were 1,283 asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers enrolled from the Ruijin Jiahe Fangcang Shelter Hospital, Shanghai (59.6% male; mean age = 39.6 years). Questionnaire measures of sleep disturbance, entrapment, defeat, anxiety symptoms, and background characteristics were obtained. A mediation model was constructed to test the mediating effects of entrapment and defeat in the association between sleep disturbance and anxiety symptoms. RESULTS: The prevalence rates of sleep disturbance and anxiety symptoms were 34.3% and 18.8%. Sleep disturbance was positively associated with anxiety symptoms (OR [95%CI] = 5.013 [3.721-6.753]). The relationship between sleep disturbance and anxiety symptoms (total effect: Std. Estimate = 0.509) was partially mediated by entrapment (indirect effect: Std. Estimate = 0.129) and defeat (indirect effect: Std. Estimate = 0.126). The mediating effect of entrapment and defeat accounted for 50.3% of the association between sleep disturbance and anxiety symptoms. CONCLUSION: Sleep disturbance and anxiety symptoms were prevalent among asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers. Entrapment and defeat mediate the association between sleep disturbance and anxiety symptoms. More attention is needed to monitoring sleep conditions and feelings of defeat and entrapment to reduce the risk of anxiety.

ABSTRACT

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused widespread increase in stress and affected sleep quality and quantity, with up to 30% prevalence of sleep disorders being reported after the declaration of the pandemic. This study aimed to assess perceived changes due to the pandemic in the prevalence of insomnia and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in Korea, and identify the associated factors. An online survey was conducted among 4000 participants (2035 men and 1965 women) aged 20-69 years enrolled using stratified multistage random sampling according to age, sex, and residential area, between January, 2021 and February, 2022. The questionnaire included various items, such as socio-demographics, Insomnia Severity Index, and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Insomnia was defined as difficulty falling asleep and difficulty maintaining sleep more than twice a week. EDS was classified as an ESS score ≥ 11. Insomnia was reported by 32.9% (n = 1316) of the participants (37.3% among women and 28.6% among men). Multivariate logistic regression revealed that insomnia was associated with female sex [odds ratio (OR) = 1.526, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.297-1.796], night workers (OR 1.561, 95% CI 1.160-2.101), and being unmarried (OR 1.256, 95% CI 1.007-1.566). EDS was reported by 12.8% (n = 510) of the participants (14.7% among men and 10.7% among women). EDS was associated with male sex (OR 1.333, 95% CI 1.062-1.674), and being employed (OR 1.292, 95% CI 1.017-1.641). During the COVID-19 pandemic, the prevalence of insomnia increased in Korea, while there was no significant change in EDS compared with pre-pandemic evidence.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Depression is a major public health concern. Emerging research has shown that cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is effective in treating individuals with comorbid insomnia and depression. Traditional face-to-face CBT-I encounters many obstacles related to feasibility, accessibility, and help-seeking stigma. CBT-I delivered via smartphone application could be a potential solution. This paper reports a protocol designed to evaluate the efficacy of a self-help smartphone-based CBT-I, using a waitlist group as control, for people with major depression and insomnia. METHODS: A two-arm parallel randomized controlled trial is conducted in a target sample of 285 non-suicidal Hong Kong Chinese older than 17 years of age with major depression and insomnia. Participants complete an online rapid screening, followed by a telephone diagnostic interview. Those who meet the eligibility criteria are randomized in a ratio of 1:1 to receive either CBT-I immediately or to a waitlist control condition. The CBT-I consists of six weekly modules and is delivered through a smartphone application proACT-S. This smartphone app has been pilot tested and revamped to improve user experience. An online randomized algorithm is used to perform randomization to ensure allocation concealment. The primary outcomes are changes over the measurement points in sleep quality, insomnia severity, and depression severity. The secondary outcomes include changes over the measurement points in anxiety, subjective health, treatment expectancy, and acceptability of treatment. Assessments are administered at baseline, post-intervention, and 6-week follow-up. The recruitment is completed. Important adverse events, if any, are documented. Multilevel linear mixed model based on intention-to-treat principle will be conducted to examine the efficacy of the CBT-I intervention. DISCUSSION: It is expected that proACT-S is an efficacious brief sleep-focused self-help treatment for people with major depression and insomnia. If proven efficacious, due to its self-help nature, proACT-S may be applicable as a community-based early intervention, thereby reducing the burden of the public healthcare system in Hong Kong. ABSTRACT

The Canadian Perspectives on Environmental Noise Survey was completed online by 6647 randomly selected Canadians 18 years of age and older between April 12 and May 25, 2021. The survey objective was to explore attitudes, perceptions, and expectations toward environmental noise in rural and non-rural Canada. The questionnaire assessed self-reported high sleep disturbance (HSD) in the previous year, at home. The prevalence of HSD was 7.8% overall. A list of potential sources of sleep disturbance was provided to the full sample, where 6.1%, 5.2%, and 3.0% reported HSD by noisy neighbors, road traffic noise and indoor noise, respectively. Stress/anxiety or worrying about something was selected most frequently at 12.9%. Finally, 7.6% and 5.5% reported pain/illness and partner's sleep disturbance, respectively, as sources of HSD. Reported HSD was significantly higher among respondents below 55 years of age, females, lower income groups, unemployed respondents, those on paid leave (sick, maternity, disability), and living in an urban area. Expectations of quiet, perceiving nighttime noise to have increased over time, high noise sensitivity, hearing and being highly annoyed by road traffic noise was also associated with an increased prevalence of reporting HSD. In contrast to hearing impairment and heart disease (including high blood pressure);rated physical health, mental health, anxiety/depression, and reporting a sleep disorder, were associated with increased HSD. The perceived affects of the COVID-19 pandemic on health and annoyance toward environmental and indoor noise also influenced HSD. In the fully adjusted multivariate logistic regression model, the effect of age, gender, changes in nighttime noise, road traffic noise annoyance, noise sensitivity and sleep disorder remained statistically significant. The univariate and multivariate models showed a similar prevalence of HSD between Indigenous Peoples and non-Indigenous Canadians. Results are discussed in relation to the provision of advice on sleep and health under Canada's Impact Assessment Act. © 2023

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Sleep disturbance is common in patients with asthma and can lead to subsequent impacts on health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Fit-for-purpose patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) assessing asthma-related sleep disturbance and next-day HRQOL impact (next-day impact) are needed to evaluate disease burden and treatment effects. Patients and Methods: Adults (18-65 years) from three US clinics were recruited for semistructured interviews. Concept elicitation (CE) identified how asthma affects participants' sleep and how asthma-related sleep disturbances impact their daily lives, which informed conceptual model development. Cognitive debriefing (CD) of the Asthma Sleep Disturbance Questionnaire (ASDQ), Sleep Diary, and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Sleep-Related Impairment Short Form 8a (PROMIS SRI SF8a) was completed to assess each measure's content validity. Results: Twelve individuals participated in two interview rounds (6 individuals per round). Participants most frequently reported asthma-related nighttime awakening and decreased sleep quality and duration. Negative impacts of a poor night's sleep due to asthma symptoms included feeling tired/fatigue/lack of energy and subsequent negative impacts on physical functioning, emotions and mood, mental functioning, work or volunteerism, and social functioning. Across both rounds of CD interviews, participants generally found the Sleep Diary and PROMIS SRI SF8a items relevant and easy to complete with no modifications. The ASDQ was modified for clarity and consistency. Conclusion: As described in the conceptual model, asthma affects multiple aspects of sleep that can cause next-day fatigue and other subsequent negative HRQOL impacts. This study demonstrates that the ASDQ, Sleep Diary, and PROMIS SRI SF8a items are comprehensive, relevant, and appropriate for patients with moderate-to-severe, uncontrolled asthma. Evaluation of psychometric properties for the ASDQ, Sleep Diary, and PROMIS SRI SF8a based on clinical trial data in patients with moderate-to-severe, uncontrolled asthma will further support their use.

BACKGROUND: Despite its efficacy in treating comorbid insomnia and depression, cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is limited in its accessibility and, in many countries, cultural compatibility. Smartphone-based treatment is a low-cost, convenient alternative modality. This study evaluated a self-help smartphone-based CBT-I in alleviating major depression and insomnia. METHODS: A parallel-group randomized, waitlist-controlled trial was conducted with 320 adults with major depression and insomnia. Participants were randomized to receive either a 6-week CBT-I via a smartphone application, proACT-S, or waitlist condition. The primary outcomes included depression severity, insomnia severity, and sleep quality. The secondary outcomes included anxiety severity, subjective health, and acceptability of treatment. Assessments were administered at baseline, post-intervention (week 6) follow-up, and week 12 follow-up. The waitlist group received treatment after the week 6 follow-up. RESULTS: Intention to treat analysis was conducted with multilevel modeling. In all but one model, the interaction between treatment condition and time at week 6 follow-up was significant. Compared with the waitlist group, the treatment group had lower levels of depression [Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D): Cohen's d = 0.86, 95% CI (-10.11 to -5.37)], insomnia [Insomnia Severity Index (ISI): Cohen's d = 1.00, 95% CI (-5.93 to -3.53)], and anxiety [Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale - Anxiety subscale (HADS-A): Cohen's d = 0.83, 95% CI (-3.75 to -1.96)]. They also had better sleep quality [Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI): Cohen's d = 0.91, 95% CI (-3.34 to -1.83)]. No differences across any measures were found at week 12, after the waitlist control group received the treatment. CONCLUSION: proACT-S is an efficacious sleep-focused self-help treatment for major depression and insomnia. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04228146. Introduction: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the lifestyle and sleep habits of children with chronic lung disease have changed. Aims and objectives: To evaluate the differences in sleep habits in the first year of the pandemic in children with cystic fibrosis (CF) and primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). Method(s): Primary caregivers of children with CF and PCD aged 3-16 years who were evaluated for sleep habits at the beginning of the pandemic were re-evaluated at the end of the first year of the pandemic. The Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) was used and questions were asked about sleep habits and weight changes during the first year of the pandemic. Result(s): Primary caregivers of 31 children with CF and 14 children with PCD were included in the study. The median age of the children were 10.0 (7.5-12.0) years, 42.2% of the children were female. The mean BMI of children with CF was 15.8+/-1.8, and 20.0+/-3.5 in children with PCD (p:0.001). The mean daily screen time was 2h (1-3) at the beginning and 5h (4-6) in the first year of the pandemic among children with CF, 2h (1-2.2) at the beginning and 5h (4.7-6) in the first year of the pandemic among children with PCD (p<0.001, p:0.001, respectively). There were no differences in terms of disorders of initiating and maintaining sleep, sleep breathing disorders, disorders of arousal, sleep-wake transition disorders, disorders of excessive somnolence, sleep hyperhidrosis scores between two groups during first year of pandemic. Conclusion(s): While daily screen time increased in children with CF and PCD, sleep disturbances and changes in daily habits continued in the first year of the pandemic.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The rapid shift to virtual learning in response to the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to high academic stress among health profession students. High academic stress was associated with impaired psychosocial well-being and decreased academic performance. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between academic stress, anxiety, sleep disturbances, depressive symptoms, academic performance, and the moderating effect of resourcefulness among undergraduate health profession students. METHODS: This descriptive and cross-sectional study included undergraduate health profession students. The primary investigator distributed the study link to all students through the university's Central Messaging Centre, Twitter account, and WhatsApp. The study variables were measured using the Student Life Stress Inventory, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 questionnaire, the Centre for Epidemiology Scale of Depression, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Resourcefulness Skills Scale. Pearson R correlation and linear regression analysis were utilized for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Our sample included 94 undergraduate health profession students, 60 % of which were females with a mean age of 21, and the majority were nursing and medicine students. High academic stress, anxiety, sleep disturbances, depressive symptoms, and resourcefulness were reported among 50.6 %, 43 %, 79.6 %, 60.2 %, and 60 % of the participants, respectively. However, no effect of resourcefulness was found on any of the study variables. Instead, academic stress and sleep disturbances were the strongest predictors of depressive symptoms regardless of the level of resourcefulness. CONCLUSION: Adequate academic support during virtual learning and tools to early detect subtle signs of high academic stress, anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbance should be routinely utilized by educational institutions. In addition, incorporating sleep hygiene and resourcefulness training in health professions education is highly indicated.

Purpose: Shift work has detrimental effects on healthcare workers, which may be further compounded by frontline work during the COVID-19 pandemic. We postulated that sleep would worsen and distress would increase during COVID-ward service. Methods: Doctors (n = 18) were recruited from a tertiary centre during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Melbourne, Australia. Participants had been rostered ON to consecutive 7 day or night shifts and a week OFF over a fortnight. 9 worked on COVID wards managing positive/suspected COVID patients, and 9 were allocated to general MEDICAL wards. Participants wore wrist actigraphy, and completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10) at baseline and the end of each week. Results: Both the COVID and MEDICAL groups spent less time in bed and had reduced total sleep time during their week ON shift compared to week OFF shift. The COVID group had worse sleep quality (PSQI Δ + 1.0, 6.8 vs 5.8, p = 0.036), daytime sleepiness (ESS Δ + 2.6, 8 vs 5.4, p = 0.014) and greater distress (K10 Δ + 1.7, 17 vs 15.3, p = 0.002) during their week ON compared to BASELINE. Conclusion: During the COVID-19 pandemic shift workers had poorer sleep during their week ON. Those working on COVID wards had greater distress during their week ON than those working on general MEDICAL wards. It is important to recognise the potential for sleep deficits and greater distress in medical workers during the pandemic.

Asians are one of the fastest-growing racial groups in the United States. The mental health of Asian Americans, particularly regarding depression and anxiety, needs significant attention. Various biopsychosocial factors interact to influence the risks of depression, anxiety, and sleep quality among Asian Americans. Currently, multiple methodological issues exist in the research of Asian Americans, such as limited data collection using Asian languages and inconsistent reporting of race and ethnicity data, which may be lacking entirely. All these methodological issues in research may account for the seemingly low prevalence rates of mental health problems among Asian Americans. In our study on mental health and sleep quality among Chinese and Korean Americans, we adopted multiple data collection strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic, including using culturally adaptive and validated measures as well as operating culture-sensitive procedures in the recruitment and data collection. The successful use of these strategies could promote early detection and personalized treatment of depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbance among Asian Americans. During the COVID-19 pandemic, an increase in poor mental health among Asian Indians was observed in the United States. However, the leading predictors of poor mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic in Asian Indians remained unknown. A cross-sectional online survey was administered to self-identified Asian Indians aged 18 and older (N = 289). Survey collected information on demographic and socio-economic characteristics and the COVID-19 burden. Two novel machine learning techniques-eXtreme Gradient Boosting and Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) were used to identify the leading predictors and explain their associations with poor mental health. A majority of the study participants were female (65.1%), below 50 years of age (73.3%), and had income ≥ $75,000 (81.0%). The six leading predictors of poor mental health among Asian Indians were sleep disturbance, age, general health, income, wearing a mask, and self-reported discrimination. SHAP plots indicated that higher age, wearing a mask, and maintaining social distancing all the time were negatively associated with poor mental health while having sleep disturbance and imputed income levels were positively associated with poor mental health. The model performance metrics indicated high accuracy (0.77), precision (0.78), F1 score (0.77), recall (0.77), and AUROC (0.87). Nearly one in two adults reported poor mental health, and one in five reported sleep disturbance. Findings from our study suggest a paradoxical relationship between income and poor mental health; further studies are needed to confirm our study findings. Sleep disturbance and perceived discrimination can be targeted through tailored intervention to reduce the risk of poor mental health in Asian Indians.

PURPOSE: This study (1) assessed the psychometric properties of a pregnancy-related COVID worry scale, (2) explored variations in pregnancy-related COVID worry over the course of the pandemic, and (3) examined associations between pregnancy-related COVID worry and depressive symptom severity, and evaluated sleep disturbance as a mediator. METHODS: Data were drawn from an ongoing randomized trial comparing the effectiveness of two enhanced forms of prenatal care. The current analysis includes baseline pre-randomization data collected from participants who enrolled November 2020-November 2021 (n = 201). Participants were pregnant individuals with low income and primarily Latinx. RESULTS: Our 7-item scale was valid and reliable for assessing pregnancy-related COVID worry. Pregnancy-related COVID worry did not vary significantly by any participant characteristic or pandemic stage. Pregnancy-related COVID worry was significantly associated with depressive symptom severity in multivariate analysis (p = .002). For each unit increase on the 10-point pregnancy-related COVID worry scale, the odds of mild-to-severe depression increased by 16% (odds ratio = 1.16, 95% confidence interval 1.02-1.32, p = .02), holding all other variables constant. Sleep disturbance mediated the pregnancy-related COVID worry-depressive symptom relationship (48% of the total effect mediated). CONCLUSIONS: Worry about how COVID may impact their baby, birth, and postpartum experiences was associated with higher depressive symptom severity, partly through its effect on sleep. These findings suggest that interventions related to improving sleep quality among perinatal populations may reduce depressive symptoms. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effects of occupational stress, anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbance on the level of fatigue among public health nurses (PHNs). DESIGN: The study had a cross-sectional, correlational survey design. MEASURES: A total of 198 PHNs were enrolled from 30 public healthcare centers/offices. Data were collected between May and July 2021 using a structured questionnaire to investigate the general characteristics, occupational stress, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance, and fatigue of the participants. Descriptive statistics and multiple regressions were used to determine fatigue and its influencing factors among PHNs. RESULTS: The participants showed high fatigue and occupational stress levels due to a lack of rewards. The percentage of participants with mild-to-severe anxiety and mild-to-severe depression, and those who identified themselves as poor sleepers were 44.9%, 50.5%, and 70.2%, respectively. High levels of sleep disturbance (ß = .23, p < .001), occupational stress (ß = .21, p < .001), anxiety (ß = .20, p = .016), depression (ß = .17, p = .043), being younger (ß = -.15, p = .004), and being a regular worker (ß = .13, p = .017) were influencing factors of fatigue. CONCLUSIONS: Individual efforts and organizational interventions to enhance sleep quality are needed to relieve fatigue among PHNs. Further, organizational support can be considerate of young nurses and regular workers, and alleviate their occupational stress. Moreover, anxiety and depression should be managed efficiently to reduce fatigue.

ABSTRACT

To determine if people infected with SARS-CoV-2 were at higher risk of developing selected medical conditions post-recovery, data were extracted from the database of a large health maintenance organization (HMO) in Israel between March 2020 and May 2021. For each condition, a condition-naïve group prior to COVID-19 (PCR-positive) infection were compared to a condition-naïve, non-COVID-19 infected group, matched by gender, age, socioeconomic status, minority group status and number of months visited primary care physician (PCP) in previous year. Diagnosis and recuperation dates for each COVID-19 infected participant were applied to their matched comparison participant (1:1 ratio). Incidence of each condition was measured between date of recuperation and end of study period for each group and Cox regression models developed to determine hazard ratios by group status, controlling for demographic and health variables. Crude and adjusted incidence rates were higher for the COVID-19 infected group than those not infected with COVID-19 for treatment for depression/anxiety, sleep disturbance, diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis, lung disease and fibromyalgia. Differences in incidence were no longer observed between the two groups for treatment of sleep disturbance, and diagnosis of lung disease when those hospitalized during the acute-phase of illness (any reason) were excluded. No difference was found by COVID-19 infection status for post-acute incidence of diabetes, cerebrovascular accident, myocardial infarction, acute kidney disease, hypertension and ischemic heart disease. Patients post-COVID-19 infection should be evaluated for depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, DVT, lung disease and fibromyalgia.

ABSTRACT

Due to social distancing during COVID-19, teleworking has spread in Korea. Accordingly, the effects of teleworking on physical and mental health have emerged. We aim to determine the association between teleworking and mental health, including anxiety symptoms and sleep disturbance, in paid workers. The data of paid workers from the Sixth Korean Working Conditions Survey, collected between October 2020 and April 2021, were analyzed. Gender stratification analysis and propensity score matching were performed for variables relevant to sociodemographic and occupational characteristics. Adjusted odds ratios (AORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for each sex were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression, adjusting for sociodemographic and occupational characteristics. Among 28,633 participants, analyses were performed for anxiety symptoms (teleworkers vs. non-teleworkers; men: 12.1% vs. 4.9%; women: 13.5% vs. 5.3%) and sleep disturbance (men: 33.6% vs. 21.3%; women: 39.7% vs. 25.3%). In male teleworkers, the AORs for anxiety symptoms and sleep disturbance were 1.86 (95% CI: 1.14-3.04) and 1.52 (95% CI: 1.10-2.11), respectively. In female teleworkers, the AORs for anxiety symptoms and sleep disturbance were 1.66 (95% CI: 1.13-2.43) and 1.65 (95% CI: 1.28-2.14), respectively. Our results emphasize the importance of mental health and the need for continuous education and care for teleworkers, given the rapid increase in teleworking.

ABSTRACT

Post COVID-19 conditions are complaints and symptoms in patients with a history of probable or confirmed COVID-19 after 3 months of the onset of COVID-19 and last at least 2 months. About 10-20% of people may experience post COVID-19 conditions, one of which is sleep disturbance. There is a wide range of prevalence of sleep disturbances from 6% to more than 70%. An online survey of the post COVID-19 conditions in various countries showed that 78.58% of subjects had sleep disturbances, including insomnia, sleep-disordered breathing, central disorders of hypersomnolence, circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, parasomnias, and sleep-related movement disorders. Sleep disturbance can be found starting from 2 weeks until 48 weeks or more after discharge or after having a negative COVID-19 test results. Women aged < 50 years old with severe COVID-19 infection reported a worse outcome. Several mechanisms may cause sleep disturbance in post COVID-19 condition, namely persistent viral infection and inflammation, immunity dysregulation, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Several studies discovered sleep disturbance was a major problem that affected different domains of QoL in post COVID-19 conditions. Significant correlation was found between several dimensions of SF-36 with moderate-to-severe insomnia in post COVID-19 conditions. Therefore, sleep disturbance is a major problem in post COVID-19 conditions and may affect patients' QoL, and the existence of sleep disturbance should be a concern in post COVID-19 conditions period. Further research is required to determine the prevalence based on agreed definition as well as methods to assess this condition and its impact on QoL.

ABSTRACT

College athletes may be vulnerable to sleep disturbances and depression during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of large shifts in social and athletic obligations. In a national sample of college athletes, we examined the associations between sleep disturbances and depression across two timepoints, using COVID-19 exposure as a moderator. Data were collected from 2098 NCAA Division I, II, and III college athletes during two timepoints, from April 10 to May 23, and from August 4 to September 15, 2020. First, a latent class analysis was conducted with five indicators of levels of COVID-19 exposure to determine different exposure profiles. Second, to examine the directionality of associations between sleep disturbance and depression, a cross-lagged panel model was added to the latent class membership structural equation model; this allowed for testing of moderation by COVID exposure class membership. Four highly homogeneous, well-separated classes of COVID-19 exposure were enumerated: Low Exposure (57%); Quarantine Only (21%); High Other, Low Self Exposure (14%); and High Exposure (8%). COVID-19 exposure class membership did not significantly moderate associations between sleep disturbances and depression. However, student athletes significantly differed in T2 depression by their COVID-19 exposure class membership. Depression and sleep disturbances were positively correlated at both timepoints (r T1 = 0.39; r T2 = 0.30). Additionally, cross-lagged associations were found such that T2 depression was associated with T1 sleep disturbances (ß = 0.14) and vice versa (ß = 0.11). These cross-lagged associations were not significantly affected by athletes' level of COVID-19 exposure during the beginning of the pandemic.

Object: Repeated quarantine policies over the past 3 years have led to poor psychological consequences for the public. Previous studies have proved that the quarantine policy leaves individuals vulnerable to anxiety, depression, and insomnia, especially among college students. This study aims to explore whether psychological problems during isolation continue with the release of isolation. Methods: Overall, 2,787 college students both answered a web-based survey during and after the closure management was lifted. The Patient Health Questionnaire, Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, and Youth Self-rating Insomnia Scale were measured. The cross-lagged path model was used to explore the influence of psychological impact during isolation on the individual after the release. Results: We found that anxiety and sleep disturbance levels alleviated significantly after quarantine, except for depression. As expected, a bidirectional relationship exists between anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbance. Moreover, depression and sleep disturbance can predict post quarantine depression, sleep disturbance, and anxiety, yet anxiety cannot predict sleep disturbance afterward. Conclusion: Timely and effective intervention for anxiety, depression, and insomnia during isolation is essential for individuals to repair themselves quickly after the release.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine the relationship between child sleep disturbances and parental stress during the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-sectional web-based study was conducted between February and April 2021 among 409 parents residing in Turkey who had children between the ages of 6 and 16 years. Data were collected online using the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) and the Parental Stress Scale (PSS). In the study, there was a significant relationship found between the mean scores of the SDSC and PSS (r = 0.499, p < 0.001). In the multiple regression analysis, family type, socioeconomic status, occupation, the presence of sleep problems in the child before the pandemic, and the total score of the PSS significantly affected the total score of the SDSC. The presence of sleep problems in the child before the pandemic was significantly associated with the total score of the PSS (p < 0.05). Approximately 3.9% of the children had sleep disturbances (at scores over 70 points) during the COVID-19 pandemic. In conclusion, as the stress levels of parents increase, the rate of sleep disturbances in their children increases, and many demographic characteristics are associated with the occurrence of sleep disturbances in their children. It is important that parents do not reflect on their stress related to the pandemic and that their children maintain a normal sleep pattern whenever possible. School nurses should educate children and their parents about the importance of enough sleep and factors that contribute to inadequate sleep among children during the COVID-19 pandemic.
